Despite finishing the regular season with a modest 7–5 record, Duke finished in a five-way tie for second place in the ACC with a 6–2 conference record. They earned a spot in the ACC championship game thanks to tiebreakers, and upset the Virginia Cavaliers, winning their first outright ACC title since 1962.
