The Indian state of Goa is divided into three districts: North Goa, South Goa and Kushavati.

North Goa is further divided into three subdivisions — Panaji, Mapusa, and Bicholim; and five talukas — Tiswadi (Panaji), Bardez (Mapusa), Pernem, Bicholim, and Sattari (Valpoi).

South Goa is divided into five subdivisions — Ponda, Mormugao (Vasco da Gama), Margao, Quepem, and Dharbandora; and seven talukas — Ponda, Mormugao, Salcete (Margao), Quepem, and Canacona (Chaudi), Sanguem, and Dharbandora. The Ponda taluka was moved from North Goa to South Goa in January 2015.

Proposed Third District

A proposal for a third district is under consideration. It will consist of Sanguem taluka, Quepem taluka, Dharbandora and Canacona taluka. The district headquarters is expected to be Curchorem in Quepem taluka.

The Goa Government had formed a seven member committee headed by the Chief Secretary in November 2023 to assess the need for a third district. Given the increasing population of the state, the committee was entrusted to evaluate whether the creation of a third district would lead to the development and welfare of the residents in the hinterland talukas.
